Screen Saviors

Far left or far right,
we engage here to fight.
As we sharpen our words,
all the socials lose sight.

We come out guns blazing,
thumbs red, white, and racing.
We’re glued to the news
and the outrage we’re phrasing.

Which squad will you vote for?
Whose cause will you post for?
In blue light at midnight,
whose dreams are you woke for?

Both sides are to blame
but our hands are constrained.
In a two-party system,
all skin’s in the game.

Abstaining won’t change it.
Third parties can’t tame it.
We’re here for the win
and both candidates claim it.

All venom and anger,
we won’t convert strangers.
Nor those in the middle
in swing states – game changers.

We’re wired to overdo.
Tech darkens red and blue.
Dopamine... tap that screen.
We’re fed extremes to kill the truth.

Voting’s in season.
It feels like it’s treason
to stay off our ‘smart’ phones.
To think clear. To reason.

Why talk with thy neighbor?
We’ll deal with them later.
Let’s just hug our phones
and fight easy, fight safer.

Future imploding,
we’re rabidly scrolling.
We’re signaling virtue.
We’re ruthlessly trolling.

Ranting and raving,
we can't kick this craving.
We see it, we share it.
It’s proof, and it’s scathing.

We count down to one,
hold the phone like a gun.
Do we pause... check the ‘facts’
or let the blood run?

The bell has been tolled.
Our lies have been sold.
The feed takes us deeper.
The future goes cold.
